ACTRA RACS (Recording Artists’ Collecting Society) is a not-for-profit performer collective, dedicated to ensuring that all recording artists, from session musicians to featured vocalists, are paid for the use of their work. We collect royalties within Canada and from around the world, representing tens of thousands of recording artists (directly and through our agreements with international partners) across all genres. To date ACTRA RACS has collected and distributed over $80 million. To put this right and royalty into more context, ACTRA RACS is similar to SOCAN (or ASCAP/BMI in the USA), only rather than paying songwriters, we pay the musicians and vocalists who perform on the master recordings.

ACTRA RACS collect neighboring rights royalties, so when a musician performs on a recording as a principle member of a group, and/or as a Lead performer on a solo project, and those masters get broadcast or get air play, that is what generates the performance royalty. This can happen through a variety of Tariffs such as Commercial Radio, CBC, Pay audio, Background Music Use, Satellite etc. Therefore a different type of performance royalty that what you would see from SOCAN, and in fact is a claim made on top of your SOCAN earnings.
